Cut refers to the shape the diamond has been cut into. Cuts made on the diamond are referred to as facets. The round 58-facet brilliant cut is the most popular and what most people think of when they think of jewelry grade diamonds. However, other popular cuts these days include emerald, in an emerald shape, the Marquise cut that is often called a football cut by men, since it resembles a football and the Princess cut, which is square. The Princess cut has become especially popular with new brides for engagement rings.
Rule of thumb for the guys: it is expected for a man to spend about two months salary for the engagement ring. Other popular cuts are pear shaped, oval shaped, and heart shaped. Cut also refers to the quality of the cuts, and the ranking of the diamond is partially determined by that. Uneven or poorly placed facets can adversely affect the rating of the diamond.
However, the most sold cut is the round brilliant. So every brilliant is a diamond but not every diamond is a brilliant. Always remember that brilliant refers to the round shape.
