Diamond Carat Weight

Diamonds are graded by the four C's: color, cut, carat, and clarity. Let's take a look at the diamond carat weight first. Carat is the point system used to measure the size of a diamond, with 100 points assigned per carat. Therefore, a half-carat diamond would be rated at fifty points. Carat weight of the diamond is usually described in total carat weight of the entire diamond. Since large stones without flaws are rare, expect to pay a premium price for any diamond above one carat in weight. In fact, the price will be proportional, so a .90-carat weight diamond will cost much less than a one carat, or 1.1-carat weight diamond.

If you are shopping around for a diamond and you found a 1 carat or 1.05 carat diamond and its price is above your budget it might be worthwhile to ask your jeweler to look for a similar stone of 0.95 or 0.97 carat. The difference in price is substantial and you can hardly tell them apart if you put the two next to eachother.
